In the example you give its more like democracy, such a hard concept for the Democratic party to get. In most states (possibly even every state) and in the country at large a majority of the population is against same-sex marriage. You might justify it on another principle besides democracy. You can try to argue that a right is being violated and that even if a democratic majority doesn't want same-sex marriage we have to allow it anyway, but to bash the GOP on this for not understanding or being responsive to democracy is just silly.
