As long as the social services came from the individual states I would be fine with that, assuming they were adequate. I simply don't think private institutions can pick up the slack for the kind of social safety net I want to see- so yes, I want to see government mightily involved (and BTW, the one we have certainly isn't perfect, and I would love to see it changed to encourage the kind of behaviors I think are healthy for a society. Lots of incentives for education. Pay people not to have children. Have something akin the the CCC, so people don't get benefits without working in some way- because I do think that meaningful work makes us more complete human beings.)
