Propaganda: Masquerading as news

SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER EDITORIAL BOARD
Tuesday, March 15, 2005

Americans used to laugh at the former Soviet Union, China and Cuba for having government-broadcast news about the successes of government policies. We can't look down on their domestic propaganda machines any more.

The U.S. government is doing a pretty good job of indoctrinating Americans through the media. The Bush administration has been caught paying writer and broadcaster Armstrong Williams to boost its No Child Left Behind law and allowing a GOP-planted phony to masquerade as a member of the White House press corps. Now, a New York Times investigation reveals the widespread broadcasting of government-produced "news" on local television stations around the country. The segments regularly provide favorable coverage on farming, foreign policy and aviation security, something that, coincidentally, an internal report says may be faulty.

The newspaper reported that many government offices send out video news reports that stations show with no attribution. Such broadcasts violate journalistic ethics standards, including a clear prohibition in one code developed by TV and radio news directors.

But the government's efforts at subterfuge, which apparently began during the Clinton era, are increasing. The administration has brushed off criticisms from the congressional Government Accountability Office warning of "covert propaganda." Hidden or open, propaganda is an embarrassment to a free people.
