In comparing ourselves to others it is always easy to find examples of those who are much worse that ourselves, that's easy. What is not so easy is when we compare ourselves to a holy God. If I was to compare myself at 6ft2 to someone who is seven feet tall I would rightly think that person was much closer to a basketball net and therefore has a distinct advantage over me in reaching that goal. However if the target was the moon or the sun or the nearest galaxy, then the difference in height would be comparatively inconsequential.

So it is in the area of righteousness. Compared to someone like Dahmer you look pretty good but compared to an infinitely holy God.... not so good. We don't get to rig the test that way. God does not grade on the curve. There are degrees of punishment in hell where all people receive the justice they deserve, but Heaven is reserved for those who are perfect. Perfect either through their own righteousness, or that which has been imputed to them through the substitutionary sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Since the first is not an option for those who have already sinned, that leaves only Jesus Christ. That is why He is the only way.

BTW there are degrees of reward in Heaven as well, but entrance itself remains by grace through faith.
