Having tried both Tivo over Comcast cable and generic DVR from DISH, I've always believed that Tivo is superior. Much more robest and more intuitive user interface. But I have not compared Tivo to Comcast DVR/digital system.

I got a comcast DVR last year to record the Olympics (My TiVo just could not get it all). My intention was to return the unit after we had watched everything.

After about 48 hours of trying to record things, and a lot of swearing, its hard disk finally died. I got the message, and went out to Best Buy and purchased another TiVo.

Comcast charges 9.99 for DVR service, however, you have to subscribe to digital cable service which maintains an additional monthly cost to standard cable and other costs (see below).

I have Comcast standard cable and have no desire to upgrade to digital service as the service is not always available and you must have an expensive TV to see a difference.

That is why I have Tivo and why I believe Comcast has partnered with Tivo.

This was copied from Comcast website:

"DVR requires subscription to Comcast Digital Cable. Equipment is required. DVR recording capacity is limited. ON DEMAND and Music Choice channels cannot be recorded. Upon service termination, all Comcast-provided equipment must be returned to Comcast in good condition. Installation charges are additional. Call your local Comcast office for restrictions and complete details about service, prices, and equipment. Service is subject to terms and conditions of Comcast Cable Subscriber Agreement."
