I'm reading a really good book that discusses how social institutions can be divided into Form, Matter, Process, and Meaning. Pretty good read: Fritjof Capra: "Hidden Connections". I read his first book 30 years ago, the "Tao of Physics." The new work is focused on social sciences.

These "Meanings" are fuzzy and constantly changing. We try to create meaning as humans. We want meaning. What is the meaning of our being in Iraq? We aren't sure. If we aren't sure why we are there, then we really can say that having an 18 year-old shooting Iraqis is worth it, can we?. It can't just be democracy and minority rights, because we don't seem to value that here, given the fraud in the elections and the belief that 51% constitutes a mandate. It can't be because we respect self-determination because we don't. The good news is that the meaning will come despite the chaos now and the discomfort we feel can be part of growth. Stress and chaos can also kill an organism (if that's what a country is) because it exceeds the resilience of the system.
