The enormous harm is that Terri Schiavo is being deprived of her freedom. She is a slave.

It is not for you or her parents to decide her fate. She was not a child at the time of the heart attack. It was clearly and convincingly demonstrated that she would have wanted the feeding tube to be removed.

We have a system of courts to decide disputes. There was a dispute over Terri's wishes, and that dispute was settled. The decision was reviewed by 18 other judges, all of whom ruled that the trial court acted correctly.

Living by the rule of law means sometimes you will disagree with a court's decision. If everyone wants to just give up the rule of law and live in anarchy, that's fine with me but I would like advance notice so that I can stock up on canned food and ammo.

I'm sorry they lost their daughter 14 years ago and pity them that they still can't let go.

I still have a lot of sympathy for Terry Schiavo's parents.

I'm having trouble determining what exactly is the enormous harm of allowing them to continue to care for her.

There are two harms that come to mind. One is the harm to Terri on the off chance that she has some self awareness. It would be torture to be trapped in a dead body--to, say, have an itch you can't scratch not to be able to communicate with anyone, to be bored with nothing but your own thoughts for a lifetime. The other is the harm to the rule of law, one of the foundations of our society, when we arbitrarily make an exception rather than abiding by due process. Those have to be weighed those against the harm to the parents.
