It is impossible to be informed about the Bible. Which facts and versions would those be that comprise being informed and how would one check them?

It's not that hard; just cross reference every mention of Satan or the devil along with any other names that are used for the same being and read them. Simple search engines have made this much easier to do than the old method of plowing through an exhaustive concordance.

"Embarrassed?"

Your not? Fine, but it was you that posted the "STRAW MAN ALERT" I mistakenly thought that might apply to you as well.

"The facts are that I've analyzed much of the Bible and found it dreary and uninspiring."

Why then were your references to the devil and his role so off base.

"Understanding comes from meaning. It is impossible to take the whole Bible as a document and walk away with meaning short of picking and choosing those lines which resonate with you."

Not at all. I have several systematic theology books on my shelves, but reading is the first step. All the different versions are all translations of ancient Greek manuscripts. There are minor variations mostly copiest errors but because there are so many texts to compare with one another there is little doubt what the originals said.
