The Conservative Member of Parliament for New Brunswick South-west said on Tuesday that the federal government must close a key waterway to liquefied natural gas tankers destined for U.S. ports.

Two LNG terminals are proposed for the U.S. side of Passamaquoddy Bay, but tankers would have to pass through Canadian waters to get to them.

Greg Thompson believes liquefied natural gas is dangerous, particularly in the narrow confines of Passamaquoddy Bay.

Thompson said LNG tankers must invoke a law of the sea known as the "right of innocent passage" to move through Canadian waters.

But he said that right could be revoked if the ships present a danger.

"By innocent, it means that a number of things could not happen," said Thompson. "For example they couldn't be engaged in any kind of activity that would prejudice the security of the coastal state."

Head Harbour passage is a narrow channel between New Brunswick's Deer and Campobello Islands. It's also the only route to two proposed LNG terminals in Maine.

Opponents of the LNG terminals are hoping Canada will block the waters to tankers.

"We on the U.S. side are really supporting the efforts of the Canadians to define and clarify and confirm the laws and treaties and everything that is firm on some of these issues," said Linda Godfrey of Maine.

A spokesperson for Transport Canada said the federal government is monitoring the situation and has been promised by its American counterparts that it will be consulted before either LNG proposal is approved.
