Our President allows Wolfowitz, Pearle and Feith in his government. It is HIS fault they are there. Israel is becoming more self-sufficient with their military complex, but it has not always been that way. If we publicly give up on them they will all be slaughtered anyway. I also would LOVE "to see an American President INSIST on enforcing UN resolution 242! (dismantle all illegal settlements, return to '67 borders) He'd be an instant hero in the Arab world." What would you do with Taiwan and South Korea? Sioux

I don't think your statement that our foreign policy toward Israel is so tilted really holds up to reality. FDR made a deal with the Saudis before Israel existed. We have sold them arms, trained their pilots, and have let them off the hook as far as human rights are concerned for the sake of their oil. Now you seem to be suggesting we forsake Israel because they DON'T have the oil--as if oil might be the only rationale for our relations with that region---- and at the same time saying our invasion of Iraq is because they DO have the oil. (It is!-just look at how we structured the election to favor the Kurds) We sell arms to Egypt, have a positive relationship with Jordan and curry favor with numerous other Arab states in the region. The point is, I think our interest in the area has been to maintain a BALANCE of power that is in our own interest. What has been missing, I agree, is more pressure on Israel to clean up its act, get to the table and resolve the border issues. Clinton tried mightily to do this, but Bush has let it all slide. On the other hand, we let the Saudis get away with murder for the sake of the oil. Comparing AIPAC with Hezbollah or a Communist party, though, is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?
