EMC May Suffer From Hitachi's Consumer Emphasis
03.17.05, 10:44 AM ET

Banc of America Securities reiterated a "buy" rating and $15.25 target price on EMC (nyse: EMC - news - people ), but said the systems company could be hurt by plans by Hitachi (nyse: HIT - news - people ) to reduce production goals in its enterprise business. "With enterprise drives supply already tight, a reduction in enterprise supply would clearly be a negative for all enterprise storage vendors, including EMC," Banc of America said. The research firm said Hitachi intends to place greater emphasis in terms of new capital on high-growth segments, such as consumer electronics. "We would expect all drive vendors, not just Hitachi, to place similar emphasis on these growth areas, as we forecast small form-factor drives to grow at greater than 50% in units in 2005 versus 15% for enterprise," Banc of America said. The research firm said that Hitachi is still committed to fiber channel enterprise drives, and improving yields and production levels throughout 2005. An increase in enterprise drive supply in the second half of 2005 will "help relieve margin pressure on all storage vendors including EMC," Banc of America said. The research firm's top sector picks are EMC and Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ), which is rated at "buy" with a $44 target price. Its least favorite pick is Western Digital (nyse: WDC - news - people ), rated at "neutral" with a $11.25 target price.
