If a ban would happen, then in a decade or so America will start to see a much better society and a enormous decrease in stupid fatalities.

Possibly, but I can't imagine such a thing in the forseeable future.

You'll on occasion see people claim that liberal gun carry laws help reduce crime. Sometimes they mention the names of the studies, at times not. But the number[s] bantored about are 2 million or 2.5 million and typically refer to the work by John Lott Jr. or Kleck. Here's a nice paper, fairly short that addresses some of the issues and refers to other work for a more comprehensive assessment.

I'll mention a couple of things....Look at the dates in the left hand column of John Lott Jr. published works... 1997-1998. While it could theoretically take some time to get a book published his working papers/articles were published in 1997. His study looks at the years of 1977-1992. He couldn't get data after 1992 for his working paper in 1997? That's a red flag that he's looking at data and picking which data suits his intended purpose. It's a good bet that if you pull the data after 1992, it'll conflict with his conclusions.

Then there's the Kleck and Gertz survey. Nifty. If you use the Kleck and Gertz survery to estimate the number of robbery victimizations, you come up with 5 times the number of crimes that the National Crime Victimization Survey by the US Bureau of Justice comes up with. Hmmm...someone is blowing smoke, either Kleck and Gertz are blowing smoke or the US Bureau of Justice is blowing smoke.

And just for fun....Kleck and Gertz estimate that there were 2.5 million cases of defensive gun use in 1992 [1% of respondents]. Thus reducing crime. In a different unrelated study, 6% of respondents claimed that had personal contact with aliens from space. It's a legitimate question...of those 2.5 million cases of defensive gun use, how many were defending themselves from space aliens? And do you want a citizen who has had personal contact with space aliens to own a gun? It may be permitted under law...but I'd like to see a little regulation...if there is someone that has a gun and has had personal contact with space aliens...they should have some observable marking [patch, ribbon, tatoo...etc.] that identifies them as such. I want to be at least on the other side of the street.
