For a nation that has over 20% of the worlds GDP and by far the strongest military "sitting at the head of the table" isn't an unrealistic and arrogant expectation.

"Sitting at the head of the table" doesn't mean that everyone falls in line with you or does whatever you say. Perhaps are difference is only, or mostly a semantic one over what "sitting at the head of the table", means in the context of nations in the world.
