That's because far too many Americans get their worldview from the fascists like Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. I don't think that's the reason. I never watched those programs before moving to the ME, and never questioned the basic idea (Israel is our ally) because I didn't care about it that much. Now that I live in the ME, it comes up more often and after educating myself a bit have formed my own opinions. If you ask me, the failure of America to view the Israeli-Palestinian conflict equally lies with the Arab governments. Saudi Arabia could easily fund a $500 million US campaign to educate Americans about the issue over the next 5 years, and hire top US media consultants to do it. The Palestinians have plenty of pre-American value arguments on their side which ordinary Americans would support if they were just given the information. But the Arab government's don't reach out to ordinary Americans, and the pro-Israel campaign continues essentially unopposed.
