"Studies by public health professionals have repeatedly found that having a gun around for any reason increases the likelihood that a family member -- as opposed to a criminal -- will be injured or killed with a gun."

Word games. Not sure if it is true or not. But the successful resolution of a break in does not end in the perp being killed. Ideally he/she would be arrested, and most times they will choose another victim. So without other data, the sentence above is just to appease gun haters like you.

"criminals armed with handguns committed a record 931,000 violent crimes in 1992"

Sounds like justification for protecting yourself. Looks like at least 1 in 300 of us Americans (assuming each occurance only had one vitim). Carry that over 50 years and there is a 1 in 6 chance that you will be a vitim in your adult life. Doesn't seem as impossible as you think.

"Firearms could contain defects in design or manufacture making them likely to unintentionally discharge"

haha. This one is funny. Ever wonder why there are no examples? Guns don't kill people. People kill people.

I also note on the condemnation of the Kleck study that there was no mention of the major premise. When people were allowed to carry, crime went down. Your silly study says only 62,000 did it over a 6 year period. Utterly ridiculous in a country of nearly 300,000,000.

No link on the story either. Just unrelated studies partially outlined. Good enough for the gun haters, but not good enough for clear thinking individuals like myself.
