BCB:

One takeaway from the automakers for the last 12 months is how profitable it can be to short/buy puts on stocks in downtrends. GM has been in a downtrend since the beginning of 04. Was it only a matter of time before the bottom fell out? Who knows, but experience has generally shown the profitability of taking measured, properly managed positions in line with trends.

i think the legacy costs are what i hampering older american companies compared to newer foreign companies...
logic says that gm closes american plants and starts shipping cars from china....
either that or declare bankruptcy down the road to get rid of the legacy costs like some airlines did..

The big three knew this was coming. How could they NOT know? It looks like their gravy train may have finally run out of gas but most folks around here are surprised it lasted so long. I don't think we will have to wait long to see how they respond to the changing conditions.

i agree with a speaker on tv i heard this afternoon (and i have no idea what program it was). he said the auto companies are going to have to go bankrupt like the airlines to attempt to get their labor and pension problems moved along.
