I think what some people are missing is that the war is over in Northern Ireland. The NYPD is an Irish Catholic patriotic organization, not an objective voice. The Irish in North America terribly romanticize the Troubles, and throw millions of dollars in collection plates that contribute to actual real and often innocent civilian people dying. It is time to move on from that, I believe.
