You, and others, like to point out that a large majority of Americans don't want to see ANWR exploited... So where did they come from? The so-called blue voters aren't a large majority. Even Bubba is aware that if he wants to plug a Bambi, a Donald, or hook Charley the Tuna, there have to be Bambis, Donalds and Charleys available. So there is political support for national parks and wildlife areas, in addition to protected wetland nurseries. Who do you think spearheaded the drive to ban lead shot, which is now a global phenomena? Hint, it wasn't Green Peace... Now true, no one is going to mistake them for tree huggers. And they might be more inclined to balance off economic growth with protecting the environment. In addition, they usually don't get worked up over the decline of the South East Magnolia Three Toed Mouse vs. the East Magnolia Three Toed Mouse. But to make the assumption that just because they like to hunt and fish, they have no appreciation for the environment shows a lack of understanding. Drumming up support for ANWR shouldn't be hard. The fact of the matter is that ANWR crude is pretty heavy crude. AFAIK, all US refineries can only take light crude, the stuff that currently goes for $55 a barrel. There is a price differential of more than 10% between a light crude like West Texas Intermediate and the heavy crudes. ANWR will increase the supply of heavy crude and thus, lower its price and increasing the spread between light crude and heavy crude. Which doesn't help us at all. Any refinery that can handle heavy crude is already doing so, the price difference is too compelling. So drilling ANWR isn't going to help us at the pump at all.
