Of course, after the patents run out, the gravy train stops, and things sell for $8.00

So the Pharma guys get to either -

Find a cure or fix for something else...(means work + risk)

Or run really stupid ads about "the new purple pill"
(which is slightly more effective for maybe 5% of the people than the old purple pill)

Give the money to the shareholders as dividends

Or if all else fails, buy a drug from some biotech guys. ;-)

This has worked out exactly as the framers of the constituion intended.

Incentivize the hell out of people by offering a temporary monopoly, then the invention becomes a public good.

Ray, Americans aren't being ripped off by Big Pharma. You are quite entitled to start a business, invent [or buy] some intellectual property, and start selling in competition with those Big Pharmas. If it's so easy, and profitable, why do you suppose more people aren't doing it?

I don't have any money invested in big, or little, Pharma. There's more to be made [I hope] in mobile cyberspace. It's more useful too than making some chemical soup to keep a self-destructive old person alive for a few more years. Many diseases are self-inflicted. Maybe most. Albeit through ignorance rather than deliberate self-abuse.

Smoking, obesity, booze, melanoma, heart disease, stroke, asthma, stomach and colon cancer, injury, etc. etc., all self-inflicted, [it took me decades to figure out asthma - environmental allergy and nutritional status].

Go on, start a Big Pharma. Or buy shares in one.
