Big difference between nra and hizbollah.

No kidding! The unfortunate spokesman should have said "no room for unregulated militias ..." Actually, no room for independent militias, IMO.

It was a reflection of the times

I agree.

Yesterday everyone was ranting and raving about judicial activism re: gay marriage as infringing rights

I read some of that but didn't jump in. What I have observed is that a given individual favors judicial activism when the activism favors whatever they like, and becomes a firm believer in strict constitutional language when it goes the other way.

You had some good posts on the subject, and I agree pretty much with your view. It is interesting to look at the function (over time) of both courts and religion in American life. I tend to view religion as a brake on the wheels of change. Judicial activism is the gas pedal. But those rolls sometimes change. Look at civil rights issues around the civil war vs the 1960's and how religion and judicial POV's came to bear.

Also, i do not doubt that there is a problem with armed nativist militias in the US

I live in eastern Oregon. There used to be a group in this area (and over into Idaho) of just such nutcases. I took a rather dim view of them. They were great advocates of the 2'nd Amendment, as you can well understand.

Bush and Cheney are not supporters of these militias

I know.
