The stuff that Mark McGuire was using, andro, is not a steroid per se, but a precursor, basically an amino acid. Health food stores make a ton of money selling fancy amino acids to body builders but for the most part they'd probably be better off saving their money for high quality protein like steaks or eggs.

A long time ago I worked as an assistant manager in a health food store. The owner, who was a body builder, used to say that body builders would take anything if you told them it would build muscle, they'd even eat rat turds if you told them it would build muscle.

Similar for the sex drive, or what the old black guys would call "the nature." These old guys would sidle up to me and ask me what I had for "the nature" and I'd hand them a bottle of ginseng. This was long before Viagra. Hey, 50% of everything is in the imagination, no?

My husband take DHEA, swears it works. Seems to do something, anyway. And half the menopausal women in America are eating yams and rubbing yam extract on their skin as a natural hormonal supplement. Fact is, this stuff is not very well understood, but I don't think MDs are the sole source of wisdom when it comes to the body. Most of them are just interested in money, anyway, and lack any genuine interest in science.

We'll all be long dead and gone before they figure everything out perfectly, assuming that's even possible.

This is just a witchhunt-I find it ridiculous to go back and crucify a few for what everyone was doing in that epic. My gym used to be full of steroid freaks- Now sleek and slim is the style-thank God but why go back and crucify a select few just to make political hay.
