You can use water for the feedstock if you have enough cheap electricity from nuclear or wind generation. But I'm skeptical of hydrogen because of the storage and transportation problem.

Ethanol is a good alternative fuel. It's easy to store, won't solidify in cold weather, and we already have an infrastructure that can handle it. The current methods of producing and utilizing ethanol are inefficient, but research is underway to address these problems. Electric batteries are another possible alternative.

I think hydrogen, biodiesel, ethanol, and electric batteries will duke it out for another decade or two before we have the clear winner(s).
