I was 5 in 1973.

I do remember how that story kept going years after ut aired even if I didn't know the source of it.

In the 80s I heard people passing off the story as something that happened back in the 70s. Sometimes when there was a spike up in oil prices some people even claimed it was still happening (in the 80s not now in 2005). It was usally something like "my best friend's cousin says that he heard that there are hundreds of tankers sitting off the coast..."

Of course what so silly about the story comming out when oil prices go up is that if the oil price goes up there would be more incentive to sell the oil. If it ever made sense to leave full tankers off the coast (and it doesn't ever make sense) it would make the least sense when prices are high and the most sense when prices are low.
