Dell Settles Dispute With 31 Workers Over Muslim Prayers...

DOW JONES NEWSWIRES
March 18, 2005 1:04 a.m.

NEW YORK -- Dell Inc. (DELL) apparently settled a dispute with a group of Muslim workers who claimed the computer giant forced them from a plant in Nashville, Tenn. for seeking to pray at work.

News of the settlement came in a press release Thursday night by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, a group that was retained earlier this week to represent the 31 employees which Dell had hired on contract through the staffing company Spherion. Corp. (SFN).

A Dell spokesman said he hadn't received word of the settlement and couldn't immediately comment. Earlier this week he described the incident as a result of "miscommunication" between supervisors and the workers who lost their jobs.

Spherion, which CAIR said also took part in the settlement, couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

CAIR said that under the agreement the employees who left work last month will be reinstated, receive back pay and be granted religious accommodation. Managers will also receive additional training on existing religious accommodation policies and practices. Other terms of the settlement weren't made public.

At least some of the workers had already been reinstated prior to the agreement. Dell had also said earlier this week that it would offer to reinstate the others.
