I am a Liberal in almost every way possible, but I don't think government should intrude into our lives any more than it has to. You don't really want Government to come up with drug policies for professional and amateur athletics (including athletics in public and private school systems). Inevitably they will get it wrong (eg., You won't be able to take an aspirin before you go to your bowling league). If Bart Giamatti were still commissioner of MLB, we wouldn't be having this problem. Giamatti handled baseball as a public trust (as it should be handled) and does not come from the player or owner side. Fehr is not anyone I would want to deal with - he is destroying baseball. At one time owners were really taking advantage of baseball players. Baseball players as recently as late 1970's had to get jobs in the off season. Today the majority are millionaires. They could have guaranteed contracts up to a quarter of a billion dollars. That is going too far. On the other side the owners are largely ineffective. Baseball is not a game anymore where the owners were more interested in the game than to run it like a business (Tom Yawkey etc). Today, it is not a business either (you really can't make any money from it (eg, Disney, Murdoch, etc are all getting out of the business). It is just a mess. That is, on the business side. The game, itself cannot be destroyed. You don't have to be a Boston Red Sox fan to enjoy last years baseball sesaon. There is nothing like it. The game is still terrific.
