Elections are state by state and what we really need is VOTE BY MAIL. That immediately eliminates many of the problems of 2000 and 2004:

- Diebold and ES&S voting machines like those that already have votes stored within them, those that count backwards and even those who refused to get out of the warehouse and go to Democratic areas.

- Intimidation at the polls

- 10 hour voting lines in Democratic areas due to lack of machines

- Provisional ballots

====== Vote by mail is cheaper, it allows someone to take days to read about, think about and vote. Vote by mail is private and, with a carbonless copy, has an automatic papertrail in the hands of the voter.

Even with a blooming receipt, there's no guarantee that the machine will record votes properly.

Vote by mail also allows for centralized (and therefore monitored) vote counting and recording as all the ballots arrive in one location instead of in each polling area.

Vote by mail also eliminates the need for people to lose time from work which employers should but do not always allow. This year I heard that one employer gave his employees exactly 30 minutes (including travel time to the polling place) to vote.
