when my father- in- law was dying, we used sponge applicators dipped in ice water to help keep him comfortable...

it helped him tremendously, even when he got to where he couldn't speak, you could see the look of appreciation in his eyes...as he would nod affirmatively

i can't even imagine anyone being so barbaric as to refuse water to a dying person

<<Just rubbing somebody's lips and tongue with a sponge dipped in water can be a great deal of comfort. Even the Roman soldiers did that for Jesus when He was on the cross.>>

My father had a tear in his aorta and was in a coma, only 76 and still played 18 holes pulling his clubs the week before. The doc said go home and the hospital would call. I stayed and was watching the Bears win when he woke up. SOB, the Bears are winning thing. He was wide awake and sitting up and we talked all night. He kept asking for water and I kept getting it for him. Finally asked a nurse, oxygen is a drying agent and the water part hadn't been refilled because he was supposed to be in a coma or dead. If I hadn't been there he would have had a terrible thirst.
