MORALE: Don't Land Near the Naked Sailors

March 18, 2005: Sunbathing is a popular pastime for sailors, at least when the ship is in tropical waters. It’s also a bit of a morale boost, as the female sailors will often wear very skimpy attire while working on their tans. But this can sometimes cause problems. During the Aceh relief operations in January and February, the American aircraft carrier hosted many civilian aid workers on board. Most of the flight operations were with helicopters, leaving a lot of the flight deck free for other activities, like sunbathing for the civilian aid workers and off-duty sailors. But the captain soon had to ban such activities on the flight deck, as the nearly naked female sunbathers were providing a dangerous distraction to incoming pilots, and the ground crews moving around on deck. The sunbathers were banished to other parts of the ship that were less visible to incoming aircraft.
