Bill,

The big push on this case is a religious one. Especially from the Catholic church, which doesn't want this to be possible.

Absolutely wrong. The Catholic church teaches that unnecessary medical care and prolonging suffering are also wrong.

So prolonging the life of a terminal patient against their will would be wrong. As would taking the life of disabled person, or an unborn child. The presumption is life.

The videos, which are recent, hilight the complexity of this case. While the left evokes the issue of state interference in a family decision - they ignore the parents who have been fighting a husband with a financial interest in seeing his wife pass away.

This is not mentioned much in the MSM.

As CB has pointed out - you should make very sure your wishes on these issues are spelled out in a living will.

Terri did not have that - and her husband and parents disagree on her disposition.

I would be inclined to believe the Husband if he had no financial interest, a live in girlfriend and children by her.

Oh - that is mentioned much either.

John

By the way, I think we mostly or basically agree on Schivo and the appearance of the voices of so many Catholics and what is called the religious right on this issue. But why we agree may be far more interesting than why I suggest you have a mistaken opinion of cause.

I am Catholic and I am an American. The local Catholic Bishop of the Schivo's, the last I read, stated all should pray that Micheal and Terri's parent can come to agree on a treatment. The Catholic Church has not threatened damnation of Micheal for any choice he makes regarding the treatment of his wife. That to me is the official position of the Catholic Church. And I am certain, make that I know for a fact the Catholic Church does not exclude stupid people. I don't see the big push coming from the Catholic church. I do see a lot of vocal people who make me wince when I hear what they say and they are Catholic and Republicans and some have last names of Bush. And I am amazed at how blind they appear to be to what I see as the true Catholic in perfect agreement with the American way.

Newt Gingrich expounded on this idea on the words in the preamble of the Constitution. Those "endowed by the creator" words. The idea.that all men are born sovereign and can agree to yield some of their sovereignty to the government.

I believe any man is free to accept or reject God. I believe God wishes no man to be forced to accept him. From these ideas of freedom I believe every person of sound mind has the right to refuse medical or any help that may or even will incur death as a consequence. Some such choices may or may not relate to one's acception or rejection of God.

American Law of man respects the Religious belief's of men. In Catholic teaching the fact is that Marriage is the only union of people where they become one flesh. The idea of one flesh has very deep and profound implications. The self evident legal and moral conclusion I would draw is that if a spouse cannot speak, the other spouse has the right to speak instead.
Every natural right of a sound man is naturally and morally presumed to be given to a spouse.

In American law and custom a man is presumed to be honest and his opinion are honest and have integrity.

All argument and character assassinations directed at Micheal Schivo appeal to impeaching his integrity. In my opinion everything I heard towards denigrating Micheal is un-American (intolerant character assassination) and Un-Catholic ( morally judgemental and tearing asunder what God has joined). The arguments presume dishonesty based upon a trial in the court of public gossip. The goal of which is to justify breaking the marital rights of a spouse.

Do we believe every man has the right to decide to reject or accept God or medical treatment.

Do we believe a court before this cabal of rhetoric correctly deliberated and decided that indeed the husband of Terri Schivo has the right to speak for his wife. This wife who was joined together with him by God in their Vows blessed in the Catholic Church.

Love is being willing to sacrifice oneself for others. I were Terri and I saw the years of strife caused the spouse I loved and my parents decades of pain, I would thank any person who would bring it to an end. Let me die, and you go on with your lives and love one another.

The fact Micheal Schivo refused 1 million dollars makes me see the real possibility of a noble person who is stubborn as hell or one might also say a man would march into hell for a heavenly cause.

I am dismayed that it seems none I have held in high regard see the self evident truth so apparent to me. My nature is to parse and parse and parse the meaning, the nuance and what I see most is a character attack so much like a typical clinton nuts and sluts all out war against Micheal Schivo..

When I heard President Bush give what seemed an endorsement of the denial Micheal his rights, I immediately contemplated if I could remain a registered Republican and be true to my idea of being a true American. In context the last statement is about the symbolism. It is very unlikely I will ever find a democrat I could come close to voting for. But my statement is about how deep a schism I see in this. The Republican Party is leaving me.

I really don't like having an opinion so out of touch with many others who I deeply respect. But I am American and God has given me the right to the freedom to have my opinion. That has also given others the right to believe I am a fool because I believe in God or anything else that tickles their fancy.

In this area of such complex and deep emotional and spiritul considerations, the American thing is limited to offering to offer advice and giving it only when it is requested. For any who like I a Catholic believe in God the only thing beyond the American is praying to God to give another the grace to make a wise decision.

Am I enlightened or has my ego been the matrix that has pulled the wool over my eyes to blind me from a higher truth.
