Didn't know that it was liberal vs conservative...Mine came before 1843...He is listed in the NYC Directory in 1843...Turns out the mass emmigration from Germany came about 1846...that was when the major uprising happened.... Just about the time that the Irish potato famine happened as well, and those that could, came here then too. The Germans that came before 1846 tended to be the "intelligencia...." Mine was said to be an "orphan"....

At 17, I didn't think to ask my Granddad if he knew the family name...had it been changed, or is it as we know it today? Also didn't ask him if he knew the place where his grandfather was from.....I asked for names and dates, but not places. Silly me. Took me YEARS to figure out you can get dates, IF you know the PLACES.

If you know where they came into this country, you might check with a library in the area...I wrote LOTS of letters and always sent a $2 check and a SASE...many times they returned my check, sometimes not. It nearly always guaranteed me some sort of response.
