It could be a LOT longer. If you have smoked for a long time, you could radically change your health and potential lifespan by quitting. I read something that said if someone is having a lot of trouble quitting, they are probably in the group of smokers who use cigarettes to self-medicate for anxiety disorders, or to keep something down and inside that they are terrified of or can't deal with. I know my father smoked that way. He finally did quit, but it was too late, and he died a very long and slow death from COPD.
