The trend replacing many small refineries with a few mega-sized facilities has led many in the Maoist wing of the Republican party to raise an alarm.

Their long-dead leader, Mao-Tse-Tung, wanted every small Chinese village to have their own pint-sized steel smelter. Now the Maoist Republicans say, "Let a million oil refineries bloom." Apparently the design for the new micro-refineries are built around discarded pressure cookers.

I believe this new "Great Leap Forward" will fail as disastrously as the earlier Chinese version. Mega-refineries are far more efficient than smaller facilities. I'm surprised Don Coxe is so taken with the Maoist agenda.

Ralph - The Oil Sands require extensive refining to make the product commercial. To say the solution to no new refineries is the oil sands simply missses the problem of supplying consumption. Also, the issue of no new refineries being built and others being closed is a bit incomplete as well. There has been extensive work to upgrade the refineries that currently exist.
