I once had a greyhound/shepherd cross. Nicest dog I ever owned. Was like having another person in the family. I've also had cats. So I'm not much for advice except to say be careful about trying to pick a dog on principle. You can't teach an old abused aggressive dog new tricks.

I always thought I was a cat person, until my daughter got a puppy. While I still enjoy cats, the way dogs are so loving and trusting and cuddly is much different from cats. I am really sorry it took me so long to discover that. I feel like I really missed something wonderful for most of my life. And it is so fun to be able to take them for car rides, to dog parks, and for walks in the neighborhood. They provide a way to get regular exercise, and they force you to live in the present. They vibrate love in a household in a way that cats don't, either.
