>So-called freedom is nonesense when people are starving and would much prefer the "freedom" to eat - something a dictatorship is better at ensuring than a democracy in the early stages of a country's economic conditions up to a certain per capita.>

Indira Gandhi tried dictatorship in the mid 70s. The Indian masses rejected it. Threw out Indira's party when she called for elections. The policticans who won had just been released from jail!

India seems to have made the fastest progress when its central government has gotten weaker (only coalitions in power). Explain that...

India is very diverse. Is China too?

>China has some policies that have hurt people, but if you measure China over 30 years, less people have died in China than India from starvation.>

Any reliable stats?

Right now chinese leadership seems to make bold and mostly right moves at this juncture. They can be quick because as Yiwu pointed out they are dictators (right now benevolent kind). India has been moving progressively forward albeit slowly and people over there seem thrilled at this rate of growth even though it is behind China. Now Chinese leadership can easily make stupid decisions that will cause the growth to go negative as the power structure is very centralized. In case of India few boneheaded people might not be able to do the damage to the progress made so far. I am bullish on both China and India for now - however the I think the projected growth for both countries is being exaggerated.
