Yes, if the option is more than 25 cents in the money the broker will generally take care of it automatically. I just finished an option spread on BTU (Mar 80/85) that closed $14 in the money. Up to the end the highest price I could get for the option was about $4.85~4.90 plus commissions, but I held on and received the full $5. After commissions it came out to $4.98.

OptionsXpress was very good about this, but they are specialists. It may be that other brokerages would be less familiar with this and need more back and forth.
