Thomas,

what does the Catholic church teach about living wills?

Terri Schiavo is for all practical purposes already dead. She is but a husk of her former self. Anyone whose cerebral cortex is slowly being replaced with spinal fluid is alive only in a figurative sense.

There is nothing wrong with the Florida law giving her husband the right to interpret her wishes, nor was there anything wrong in the way that the law was applied by the Florida courts.

The court decisions suggest that the parents are opposed because they believe a miracle might occur. This is not enough.

At the time that Terri entered her present state of severe disability, Florida law did not define providing food and water as "extraordinary measures." The law was changed in 1999.

There is no reason to believe, factually OR legally, that she would have consented to removal of food and water.

We've all heard a lot of people say things like, "I wouldn't want to be a vegetable," or "if it comes time for me to die, I want to go peacefully, not be kept on life support." But nobody ever says, "I'd rather spend a couple of weeks in pain, dying of thirst and hunger, than (be on life support)(be a vegetable)."
