Ted, I'll sum up all of the Chosun Dynasty's last 50 years in power in a few sentences. Basically those in power signed off a lot of their authority to the Japanese. The reasons are complex, but in a nutshell Korea as an agrarian society never stood a chance.

Meanwhile, Japan was one of the first Asian countries to embrace Western ideals and technology. Among those ideals, of course, was imperialism, which Japan saw as necessary in order to survive in a rapidly industrializing world. Korea just happened to be right there, and the rest is bitter history.

While I understand your argument about Japan, it is also true that prior to the Japanese occupation, Korea had been invaded by both the Mongols and China at different times in its history. Its also true that it spent much of the second millennium as a province of China. Quite frankly, my understanding of Asian history is weak but you have to wonder why a mostly agrarian society would not see the writing on the wall and militarize. It may well be not that black and white.........its just a curiosity.....at least to me.
