In fact, service on Amtrak is excellent. The train people work hard to make the trip enjoyable. The trains have a reasonably good on time record. I'll have to take your word for it. But service can be excellent without efficancy being excellent. Sure some unreasonable routes are forced on Amtrack but they don't do as well as they should in the reasonable routes. I don't know enough of their budgetary expenses to make a comment. I do know their equipment is in poor condition due to years of deferred maintenance. Any operation with lots of deferred maintenance tends to run expensive. ted
