American society has a huge problem with euthanasia. I am not sure why--as many have noted, we treat our dying animals with more charity and provide them more comfort than we do humans. I guess it is that "slippery slope" notion. Oregon is the only state where terminally ill people with six months or more to live can decide to commit suicide, and a doctor will give them the medication to do so. And the federal government is challenging that state law in its right-to-life frenzy. So much for states' rights! What a hypocritical government we have.

I would disagree that Terri Schiavo is severely retarded, though. She is in a persistent vegetative state--the part of her brain that makes for thought and even self-awareness and awareness of her environment is gone.
