Many Army and Marine professionals disagree with you. To them a force of 400,000 is needed to properly secure the country with a minimum of casualties.

Rumsfeld only used 130,000 to try to secure the country. It's not secure yet, and casualty rates climbed in the second year.

You want to call it overwhelming by your definition...fine.

I don't think the insurgents feel very "overwhelmed" by our force and make a daily practice out of demonstrating the underwhelming nature of our force capability and force structure.
