i was there 11 years ago and many times since then. last time was june, 2004. beijing air seems worse to me now than 11 years ago. shenyang has that amazing orange air. i gotta tell you i look for some (any) blue sky each time i travel there. i finally saw some this last time at the great wall, which is a long way from anything, and it was just a patch of blue. i have been way south, way north, way west, and on several coasts (the coasts -- not shanghai -- are cleaner due to the ocean), and it seems about the same in most places. hong kong is the place to see the blue sky if one is able to wait a while for the clouds to clear. i thought hong kong had the cleanest air i have seen in china.
