I think you're right about teachers. Of course most of them are good and very dedicated, there are some that don't know what they're doing and some that really know their stuff - but don't know how to teach. When I was in HS the subjects I got the worst grades in were history and shop. Years later, as a favor, I helped a cop friend of mine in preparation for his college American History exam (while I was tending bar). Being that it was his worst subject, we both figured it couldn't do any harm. I gave him a list of about 20 questions and answers and told him to go home and memorize them. The next night he came in the bar and I quizzed him. He got all of them right but one, and he wasn't going to make THAT mistake again! He ACED the exam - best grade in the class! When asked how he made such a turn-around he HAD to tell his professor that his bartender coached him and that he learned more about history sitting in a bar than he did through all his years of school. Shop.......well I've been a contractor for 36 years now and I reckon I'm doing pretty well.

If I had it to do over again I would have put my kids in a school that emphasized learning over feelings. They were in a top notch school district, but when they had to take college prep courses after they enrolled in college just to get started, and I had to pay for it, I really hit the roof. We thought we were doing a pretty good job of monitoring their classes, but we were wrong.
