There's a big difference between pay for doing a real job of benefit to someone else and a bribe for behaving responsibly for oneself.

Furthermore, there's a big perverse incentive problem that advocates of such things don't address. That is, people who are already willing to be responsible for themselves are treated as saps by such programs and many of them eventually get the idea that being responsible without a bribe is foolish.

You've mentioned the success of getting people to read books in a class if they are bribed to do so. Do you have any evidence about what happens after the class ends?
