I based what I said in my post on my own daughter's experience with applying for all of these things. She got absolutely nothing, even though she was living independently of us in her own apartment. I will have to ask her about the being claimed as a dependent part. Since I am now totally responsible for all of her tuition, though, she certainly feels like a dependent. Even though the Pell grants are federal, different states provide varying levels of assistance to students because of how much they charge in tuition and fees at state institutions. The state I live in is extremely expensive for students.
