I knew that when I read the book and I wondered about it as well (obviously his money needs changed a little bit after his college days) because he did have a reputation for taking his poker playing quite seriously. I passed it off to the same serious nature of my own Saturday night games with the boys, where the maximum amount of money that crosses the table might be sixty to a hundred bucks. Not exactly money you make or break the mortgage payment on (keeping it to to RE here) but which comes with serious bragging rights.
