Depends if you are British or German. :)

Its controversial who invented and who stole it. The most common theory is that they both came up with it independently at about the same time. I doubt it.


Since its so controversial, I think I may put my name into the pot.

Newton used it himself long years before Leibniz came up with it. He invented it because he needed a tool non existent at the time to calculate the planet movements.
The controversy comes from the fact only that Newton published a couple of years later when he was in his late twenties(!).

To placate the Germans, however, most people give Leibniz credit for having been thinking it out independently from Newton at about the same time.
