>>Indians would have been much better off if they had been forced to integrate.<<

Forced to integrate? How about allowed to integrate? The Cherokees were fairly assimilated, with towns, houses, government, newspapers etc. But the whites wanted their land, so Andy Jackson marched 'em 1,000 miles west. Most Native Americans were not even granted U.S. citizenship until 1924.

A lot of the Indians did integrate. Most, I would say. A lot of people, all over America, are descended from Indians who left the reservation, and integrated into the main stream culture.

One of my favorite authors is Louise Erdrich, who writes about the Turtle Mountain (North Dakota) Chippewa, to which I am related. She's a lot closer to them, my family severed relations circa WWI, because my great grandfather didn't want anybody to know that his wife was Indian, so they moved away and passed for white. Erdrich has a lot of interesting things to say about the lives of the people who stayed.

It's not a rich place, even for whites, but there is a lot of prejudice against Indians there, and all over the West. Hard to make a living.

But the kid who committed these murders, he's not so different than a lot of other kids who did the same thing, from California to Alabama. A loner, brighter than average, not very physically attractive, unusual interests, picked on, rejected, and full of anger. It's the same story anywhere, he just happens to be Chippewa.

Unfortunately, a school shooting on an Indian reservation is a mark of how WELL integrated Indians are into modern American society.

Re. the school being a prison, having metal detectors - whats abnormal there? In Houston, the school district has its own police force and yes they have metal detectors.

1. Purpose.  The purpose of this memorandum is to describe random use by the Houston Independent School District Police of metal detectors in schools.
......
4. General Information.  The Houston Independent School District (HISD) Board of Education has authorized the use of metal detectors to search students and any personal property in their possession to promote safety by discouraging students from bringing weapons to school, thereby reducing the opportunity for violence in HISD schools.  The use of metal detectors is authorized by References (c) and (d).  The district's general practice for searching property and students is described in Reference (f).

A search may be conducted with either a hand-held scanner or a mobile metal detector.  A mobile metal detector is one that can be moved or transported from place to place and is not permanently affixed to the building.

The lesson here isn't that "those Indians" have a problem. America has a problem.
