There's quite a lot of difference between the abnormal and mentally deficient" and Schiavo and other brain death cases.

"The abnormal and mentally deficient" normally can feed themselves, breathe on their own and speak. There's quite a lot of activity of the cerebral cortex (not the brainstem) involved in that.
