"Is food and water heroic medicine?"

She has not had any food since 1990. What she gets is a pre-digested nutritional fluid pumped directly into her stomach.

I don't go around blaming everything on the religious right reflexively. I made my comment about the religious right because in this case, after watching quite a lot of cable news and reading on the internet, it is the religious right leading the campaign for Terri Schiavo to be kept alive.

Do you think it is someone else? If so, who?

I personally find it hard to equate tube feeding Terri Schiavo with feeding hungry poor children. Is that what you are equating?

I don't think anyone can really sort out the whole case in the sense of determining if Michael Schaiavo really believes he is acting in the best interests of his wife. I do know that at least one of her friends testified that she specifically said she would not want tubes in her, while watching a film, I believe.

But what really got me is seeing photos of Terri as a vibrant, alive young woman, and comparing those to now, with the vacant glazed nodding and the clubbed hands. There is an argument to be made that it is her parents' selfish needs that motivate them trying to keep her alive. Those video tapes are years old, and from what I have read she has no actual presence, no awareness. Does Terri not have a guardian who agrees with ending the force feeding? That person was appointed to consider only her best interests.

I also think the Republicans have made a grave miscalculation with their weird Congressional display. Talk about big government!

Oh, a couple more things. Terri Schiavo was had an eating disorder--bulemia. Even though it is really sad that she didn't get help for herself, it is the eating disorder that caused her current state. I think the smear campaign about her husband beating her into her condition is really creepy.

Also, from what I've read recently, Terri's care is being paid for by the state, not the Schindler family. I could be wrong about this--I read that on the Internet.
