My grandmother was very angry at my mom for putting the tube in her mouth. This was not the way my grandmother wanted to go. She communicated this by pointing to the tube, and miming "pull it out!" with jerky motions. It was a blessing when her heart finally gave out a week later. This last few months of life scenario is ugly. The more compassionate we can become the better. That's my wish! I don't want to be persistently vegetative - that's not who I am or was.

My friend was in a similar situation with his Dad. His mother was so hopeful every time the doctor said what could be done. The truth was the man was a diabetic, multiple amputee that was either going to die of the brain tumor or dry out and have his skin crack. The kidneys were going and so was every other major organ. Keeping his dad alive required him to override decisions that his mother was considering that ONLY served to lengthen the ordeal. Technology is grand - we can drag out people's deaths in ways that would have amazed Torquemada.

OK fine, but in the case we should always err on the side of caution.
A nation and its people will always be judged on the value it places on life, and the lives of the helpless... On that basis, I give us a "D-" so far.
